onomatopoeia

Some commonly used words which do not have a meaning but used in a specific sentences: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onomatopoeia
  • phaLa phaLa - (shining) - Colgate~ninda hallu ujjidamele avana hallu 'phaLa phaLa' anta hoLeyutittu [After brushing his teeth with Colgate, his teeth was shining]
  • jhuLu jhuLu - (flow of a river) - bheemeshwari baLi kaveri nadi jhuLu jhuLu hariyitu.[Near Bheemeshwari, Kaveri river flows continuously]
  • gala gala/kila kila - (sound of a kid laughing) - magu gala gala/kila kila anta naguttittu.[The kid was laughing very happily]
  • gaLa gaLa - (used to symbolise crying) - huDugiya chocolate keLage biddaaga, gaLa gaLa - anta attaLu [When the girl's chocolate fell down, she cried profusely]
  • paTa paTa - (fluent, continuous) - avaLu Kannada~dalli paTa paTa anta maataDidaLu.[She spoke fluently in Kannada]

  1. Onomatopoeia doesn't imply 'without meaning'. Buzz, hiss, crush, croak, are meaningful words derived from sounds.

    I like the word onomatopoeia as it has 4 consecutive vowels ;-)
