Kannada Lessons : DP : Words spelt and pronounced alike - but with different meanings (homonyms)

Here are a few words, which are spelt and pronounced alike - but with different meanings (homonyms)

hattu :
meaning 1. climb
Sentence : aa aane ee kaDe ODi baruttide. bEga mara hattu.
ಆ ಆನೆ ಈ ಕಡೆ ಓಡಿ ಬರುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಬೇಗ ಮರ ಹತ್ತು.
Translation : That elephant is running towards us. Climb the tree soon.

meaning 2. The number ten 10.
Sentence : namma mane illinda hattu km doora.
ನಮ್ಮ ಮನೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿಂದ ಹತ್ತು ಕಿಲೊಮೀಟರ್ ದೂರ.
Translation : Our house is 10 kms distant from here.

Tip :
** hattu is used in some other contexts like hattaaru (which means many). Eg: namma pakkada maneyalli hattaaru jiralegaLu ive. (Our neighbor has numerous cockroaches)


ELu :
meaning 1: get up/ wake up
Sentence : beLigge naanu 6 ganTege ELutteeni.
ಬೆಳಿಗ್ಗೆ ನಾನು 6 ಗಂಟೆಗೆ ಏಳುತ್ತೀನಿ.
Translation : I get up at 6 O’ clock in the morning

meaning 2: The number ten 7.
Sentence : nanna hattira onde taraha ELu naaNyagaLive.
ನನ್ನ ಹತ್ತಿರ ಒಂದೆ ತರಹ ಏಳು ನಾಣ್ಯಗಳಿವೆ.
Translation : I have seven coins of the same kind.

Tip :
** ELu is generally confused with hELu (which means tell). Eg: naavu trip hoguttiddaga, ellaru nange bega ELu anta hELidaru. (While we were going for the trip, everyone told me to get up early)


ettu :
meaning 1: lift/pick up
Sentence : keLage bidda pustakavannu ettu
ಕೆಳಗೆ ಬಿದ್ದ ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನು ಎತ್ತು
Translation : Pick up the book which has fallen down.

meaning 2: ox
Sentence : namma maneya pakka, 3-4 ettu saakiddare.
ನಮ್ಮ ಮನೆಯ ಪಕ್ಕ, ೩-೪ ಎತ್ತು ಸಾಕಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
Translation : They have reared 3-4 ox next to my house.


kari :
meaning 1: The color black
Sentence : banneruGhattadalli ondu kariya kOthi nODide.
ಬನ್ನೇರುಘಟ್ಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಕರಿಯ ಕೋತಿ ನೋಡಿದೆ.
Translation : I saw a black monkey in BannerghaTTa.

meaning 2: fry
Sentence : naLe UTakke happaLa kari.
ನಾಳೆ ಊಟಕ್ಕೆ ಹಪ್ಪಳ ಕರಿ.
Translation : For tomorrow’s lunch, fry papads.

Tip:
** In local slang, we also use kari as call (which is actually kare (as in hare rama)) – avaLu manege horaTalu, avaLannu kare ( she is leaving for home, call her)
** kari baNNa is also called kappu baNNa (black)


ಬಳಿ baLi :
meaning 1: close/near
Sentence : busnalli nanna baLi ondu saNNa magu kootittu.
ಬಸ್ ನಲ್ಲಿ ನನ್ನ ಬಳಿ ಒಂದು ಸಣ್ಣ ಮಗು ಕೂತಿತ್ತು.
Translation : In the bus there was a small baby sitting next to me.

meaning 2: with
Sentence : nanna baLi mankutimmanta kagga ide
ನನ್ನ ಬಳಿ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮನ ಕಗ್ಗ ಇದೆ
Translation : I have mankutimmana kagga with me.

meaning 3: apply
Sentence : swaatantra dinacharaNege namma maneya hattira makkaLu mukhakke dhwajada baNNa baLidukoNdiddaru.
ಸ್ವಾತಂತ್ರ್ಯ ದಿನಾಚರಣೆಗೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಮನೆಯ ಹತ್ತಿರ ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಮುಖಕ್ಕೆ ಧ್ವಜದ ಬಣ್ಣ ಬಳಿದುಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದರು.
Translation : On independence day, many kids near my house had painted their face the color of the flag.

Tip:
** baLi is often confused with baLLi (which means a creeper). namma maneya pakka ondu kumbaLakaayi baLLi beLeyuttide (Next to our house, there is a pumpkin creeper growing)
